  >  Trip 2023   >  A train ride to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back

Because of its mining history, Wales is dotted with narrow gauge railways. Nowadays, they are mostly built by charming steam engines for the benefit of tourists. We booked a ride up to Blaenau Ffestiniog, which was once a slate mining town. The trains have been really nicely restored, and it’s a beautiful way to see the Snowdonia landscape.

Some beautiful views as we depart Porthmadog…
…and as we climb higher up into the hills
Our train, the Mountain Spirit, waiting in Blaenau Ffestiniog before the return journey.
The Quarryman does the same journey in reverse — Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog and back.
Remnants of the slate industry dot the line.
The train rounds a bend on the way back down the mountain.
